The Chailert Family
The Chailert Family is well known in Thailand for their commitment in helping the Asian Elephant
It all started on July 1996 when we opened the doors of our elephant park for the first time with elephant riding and bamboo rafting activities. Back then it was just a simple welcome sign, a few members of staff and even less elephants. Little did we know when we embarked on that journey, just what a rewarding and uplifting experience it would be. To say it changed our lives completely is an understatement.
The park became our life, the elephants and their mahouts, our family. From that day on we were committed to the welfare, not just protecting Asian elephant but also to their handlers and families, many of whom are Karen Hill Tribe people and we remain as committed today as we were way back then.
Over the years our herd has increased to over 50 magnificent elephants and with staff employed from the local Thai population and the indigenous Karen Hill Tribe people ... as Mahouts, Bamboo Raft teams, Buffalo handlers, cooks, waiters, cleaners, Dung paper craftsmen and many more ... we have grown to the size of a large village.
The birth rate of baby elephants in our camp is second to none. Averaging 4 a year for the last 5 years and with a survival rate of 3 out of 4, we can not be beaten. Our care of infants and the welfare of our elephants is paramount to the well being of the herd and when you understand that the gestation period for a pregnant elephant is 22 months, the dedication of our staff and the ontentment of the elephants, is proven in these incredible statistics.
